Whiplash is a common ailment after a rear-end car collision. Even low-speed car accidents can result in whiplash, which is the result of a sudden jolt that causes unnatural movement of the cervical spine located in the neck. 1. Your Glove Compartment Is For More Than Gloves. Starting today, keep an “accident kit” in your car’s glove compartment. Your accident kit should contain a disposable camera, duplicate copies of your auto insurance information, a pen, and 3×5 cards to obtain witness information. Unfortunately, auto insurance statistics reveal that each of us will be involved in a car accident every 10 years of our adult life. Chances are at some point you will need to access your accident kit.

2. Just The Facts M’am. Get it in writing. If the other party admits to being at fault, have them put it in writing and sign it at the scene of the accident. Many times people will switch the their story once they talk to their attorney, the insurance company or family members.

3. Call the police. Safely pull over to the side of the road if possible first and encourage the other driver to stay. A police report is an important part of a med-legal case. Sometimes, the dispatcher will tell you that the police are not necessary and to just exchange information with the other party. If at all possible, have the officer come out to the scene of the accident.

4. Seek legal counsel. When you have been victimized by an accident, there are many legal issues to consider. I am not a fan of attorneys, but in these cases, having a competent, ethical attorney that can handle your case in a professional and timely manner is very important. Make sure your attorney was referred to you by a friend or family member you trust. Retaining an attorney will not only insure optimal results, it will alleviate much of the unneeded stress associated with dealing with insurance companies. Some people think they can save money by representing themselves. Just remember you are like an ant going against a giant when it comes to negotiating with a trained and seasoned insurance adjuster. Prior to meeting with your attorney, it is a good idea to only talk to your doctor and the attorneys staff. Do not give any statement on the phone or in person until you have spoken to your attorney. In my career, I have worked with over four-hundred attorneys. There are only a handful that I feel comfortable recommending to my patients, friends and family.

5. “But I feel fine.” Initially, you may not feel pain. This just might be from the shock of the accident. Many times accident victims don’t feel pain until the next day or two. Be proactive rather than reactive. If you feel any discomfort, stiffness, or symptoms from the accident see a doctor trained in treating auto accident patients. If you do experience significant pain, don’t hesitate to ask for an ambulance and get checked at the emergency room. Accident injuries can be worse than you think.

6. Don’t Be Macho! Don’t make the mistake of minimizing your pain. This is true especially for men. Disclose all symptoms as they can and will affect your medical evaluation and treatment. Finally, be sure to see your physical therapist, doctor, or chiropractor as often as recommended and necessary to insure complete recovery from your accident. Many patients stop their therapy prematurely when the think they are better only to have the pain return with a vengeance weeks or even months later. Sadly, unfinished treatment can lead to a poor settlement, but much more importantly, potential years of discomfort, pain and disability. Trust your doctor’s recommendations.

7. Is There A Doctor In The House? Once the acute pain has subsided, consider treating with a physical therapist or a chiropractor who specializes in auto accident injuries. Medical doctors prescribe medication which can be helpful initially, however in order to restore proper biomechanics, eliminate trigger points (knots), and aid in the neuromusculoskeletal recovery of the body, a DC or PT is the professional of choice. A good chiro or P.T. will educate you on home stretches and exercises to speed up your recovery.

8. Be careful! Just because your attorney recommended a doctor to you it doesn’t mean that physician is any good. Unfortunately, there are many therapy “mills” where patients are treated like cattle. In these “rack’m and crack’m” mills, everyone is treated the same and as fast as possible in order to maximize income. Ask questions and research your doctor. Its your health. No amount of settlement money is worth having a missed diagnosis by doctor that doesn’t take his or her time with you.

9. Don’t Go To Jail! Be honest! NEVER embellish the truth when it comes to auto accident cases. This is considered fraud. The Los Angeles District attorney’s office has a very active auto insurance fraud task force specifically assigned to bust fraudulent patients, doctors and attorneys. You WILL get caught. If anyone asks you to do anything you think might be illegal, find another provider or attorney and contact the County of Los Angeles District Attorney at 213-974-1439.

10. The Devil Is In The Detail. Start a detailed file. Remember that although it is rare, it is entirely possible you may end up in front of a judge and a jury. You may be called for a deposition or your statement will be recorded. Creating a personal file will keep all your important medical and legal papers in one place and will be a valuable resource if anyone calls you to testify. It is also a good idea to keep a journal of your case. Doctors visits, attorney meetings and lost wages from work should be included. Also, document quality of life changes. Explain how your life has been changed as a result of the accident. How has the accident affected you emotionally, socially, physically and personally. Finally, include photos of your vehicle from different angles at the time of the accident. Photos of any bruises or cuts are also important to have on file so you can share them with your doctor and attorney.

What To Expect On Your First Visit To Our Office

Your First Visit

WELCOME! You got a referral from an insurance adjuster, attorney, friend or family member and have decided our office is right for you. There are some things you can do to make your first visit go as smooth as possible. Just like any doctor’s office there is some paperwork for you to review and sign. If you were injured in an auto accident there is some additional paperwork needed. Your paperwork should take about fifteen minutes or less to fill out. Once that is done, our staff will give you a brief tour of the office and take you back to the consultation/examination room. After checking your vitals, and checking your balance with bilateral weight scales, we will conduct a test known as George’s test. This screening test lets us know if chiropractic manipulative therapy is appropriate for you.

After carefully reviewing your paperwork, Dr. Salse will do a comprehensive, one-on-one consultation with you to determine if chiropractic is the right form of treatment for you. Dr. Salse works with medical doctors and will refer out if he feels another type of doctor would be more appropriate.

The examination consists of a postural analysis, chiropractic examination, palpation, range of motion studies, neurological and orthopedic tests.

X-rays are taken on a case by case bases and are only taken when the doctor believes it is necessary.

The CA will then walk you to the front and schedule you for your next visit to go over your exam and x-ray results and schedule your first adjustment. In some acute cases, we will begin therapy treatment the same day.

The items we recommend you bring to your first visit for auto accident patients are: your driver’s license, the insurance information of the person that hit you (3rd party), your car insurance information, your health insurance, your attorney’s information and the police report (if you have them). Some people are reluctant to provide their car insurance information because they have heard that their rate will go up if they use their insurance. The truth is California Prop 103 basically prevented insurance companies from raising your rates or cancelling your coverage if you were in an accident that was not your fault or for not having an insurance.

The following day, after the doctor has had an opportunity to carefully study your x-rays and exam results he will go over them with you. At that time, if he has accepted you as a patient, you will receive your first chiropractic adjustment.

It is estimated that 15-40% of those who are injured in a motor vehicle collision will suffer from ongoing chronic pain.(Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 2007)
Whiplash injuries not only increase the incidence of chronic neck and shoulder pain, it also significantly increases the incidence of other systemic ill health effects. In other words, whiplash injuries cause more than neck pain and headache, it hurts the health of the entire body.(Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, 2001)
That essentially 100% of those who are suffering from chronic pain caused by a whiplash injury will have an abnormal psychological profile with standard assessments, and the only way to resolve the abnormal psychological profile was to successfully treat the chronic spinal pain. Psychotherapy was not able to improve the abnormal psychological profile, nor was it able to improve the patient’s chronic pain complaint.(Pain, 1997)
In the longest study ever performed on whiplash-injured patients (a study looking at the health status 17 years after injury), 55% of the patients still suffered from pain caused by the original trauma.(Accident Analysis and Prevention, 2002)

Patients tell me they didn’t want to come in because they didn’t want a medical bill. There are several ways to get your medical care without spending a penny. Many are surprised to find out that their auto insurance may cover the entire cost for treatment through what is called Med-Pay. In addition, the insurance company of the person that hit you will take care of the medical expenses. Medical insurance also covers chiropractic care and finally, an attorneys lien means your chiropractor agrees to wait for payment from the attorney when the case settles.

The longer one waits to get treated, the longer it takes to recover. In addition, the third party insurance company (the insurance of the people who hit you) love when you don’t go to the doctor right away. I have seen them use that against patients when it comes time to settle or even to accept liability.

The top five medical mistakes patient make when involved in a car accident:

1. Seeing the wrong type of doctor. Auto accident injuries must be treated correctly. Many physicians don’t know how to manage personal injury treatment or the case. They do not want to get involved in depositions or called into court to testify as an expert witness on your behalf. Most do not know about Colossus or how to write a med-legal report. Treating with the wrong doctor could potentially ruin your med-legal case.

2. Getting the wrong treatment. Unfortunately, many medical doctors will prescribe pain killers and muscle relaxants without prescribing natural chiropractic care or physical therapy. The medication, does in fact help with the pain, but it only masks the symptoms. Medication does nothing to aid in correcting the loss of the cervical curve due to spasms, or to address the scar tissue and adhesions in the muscle or to consider the long-terms affects of neuromusculoskeletal injury in years to come.

3. The six most common words in my office, “I Thought It Would Go Away”. Whether you have mild or major pain. One of the biggest mistakes patients make after an auto accident is waiting to see if the pain will go away. Left unchecked, misaligned vertebrae may cause decades of poor health. It is extremely important to at least get checked by a chiropractor. Not only can a chiropractor help you now, your investment in care may help avoid health problems in the future. Sometimes patients feel fine immediately after an accident. Many times this is because of the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism that produces adrenaline. However, when the adrenaline wears down, the pain can come on days or weeks following an accident. Even if you have no pain, it is important to at least get checked to make sure your spine was not traumatized without you knowing it. Even if I get injured, I can’t check my own back and I will see a chiropractor to make sure my alignment is proper.

4. Getting the wrong or incomplete diagnosis. Your ER or HMO doctor has given you a diagnosis of muscle strain. Did he or she take an x-ray? Did they palpate your spine for misalignments (subluxations)? Did they do a neurological, orthopedic and chiropractic exam on you? Did they even touch you? A good chiropractor will not only be looking for muscle strain, but also conditions like traumatic carpal tunnel syndrome, acute TMJ, double crush neuropathy, radiculitis, sciatica, cervicogenic headaches and many more.

5. Treating with a new or inexperienced chiropractor. Not all chiropractors are the same. Some specialize in pediatrics while others specialize in nutrition or sports injuries. Having a seasoned veteran personal injury chiropractor on your side will not only insure you are getting the experienced treatment, you can rest assured that your chiropractor will confidently testify on your behalf if need be.
